‘Picknics’… not just for the park.
After a recent discovery in Rye, I have a new number one breakfast spot…and it’s far better than a ‘picknic’ in the park.
As the weather starts to heat up and the crowds begin to swell, the popular township of Rye on the Mornington Peninsula seems to be getting busier and busier by the day. With the manic summer season not quite here, a friend and I jumped at the opportunity to take a Saturday morning walk, along the beach, over Whitecliffs and into town where we enjoyed an amazing breakfast at a local favourite ‘picknics cafe’.
We were lucky to land a table in the sun out the front, and whilst is does sit right on the main drag – the food is so fabulous you soon forget about the passing traffic.
With a laidback feel, the cafe houses a gathering of old bottles and other sea inspired collectables (without being tacky) playing off the nautical theme and allowing you to feel as if you are on ‘holiday time’.
With no table service, it enables the flexibility to split bills, order at your own pace and marvel at some of the local produce for sale behind the counter.
This cruizy little cafe has a menu packed full of mouthwatering options and after much deliberation, I settled on the ‘veg out stack’. Consisting of sauteed mushrooms, grilled tomato and avocado with a poached egg (which was cooked to perfection!) stacked on sourdough toast (or Spelt that I brought in) and sprinkled with dukkah and feta…. it was to die for!
Jessie opted for a homemade blend of dried fruits and nuts, oats and puffed corn which was oven toasted with maple and vanilla. Served with milk, natural yoghurt and cinnamon rhubarb…It was also delicious!
Another little delight spotted on the menu that had to be sampled was the organic orange juice (freshly squeezed) which was smooth, light, sweet ( but not too sweet) was slurped down in seconds.
The food was everything the menu promised (and more)! The presentation was impeccable, the service extra friendly and incredibly quick… Quite simply I was unable to fault this dreamy little seaside cafe.
Our main meals which were of generous size, a pot of tea each and a refreshing squeeze came to a total of $22 per head… more than reasonable!
So from now on,when possible, you will find me brunching at this delicious breakfast bar and I highly recommend you do too … I would even go as far to say that this food is worth battling the summer crowds, and that is certainly saying something!
